In this project, students are required to draw the key plan, location plan and layout plan for the chosen neighbourhood area. Before starting drawing, students have to make the site visit to the chosen area in groups to observe and collect the information about elements of the area.
There are 6 neighbourhood areas for students to choose for this project:
- Bayan Residences, Relau, Penang
- Sunway Mutiara, Batu Maung, Penang
- Sunway Bukit Gambier, Penang
- Siara 81, Sg. Ara, Penang
- Sunway Merica, Sg. Ara, Penang
- Setia Greens, Sg. Ara, Penang
I chose Siara 81, Sg. Ara, Penang to do observation for this project. After deciding which area to observe, my friends (who did the same area with me) and I immediately made a site visit to there on the next day. Luckily among us, Mandy who lives in Penang got a car, so she ride us to there.
Siara 81 is still new, it was just built about half and a year ago, you can found only few occupants there. The houses are designed in modern style, and we can see that suitability of occupants is paid great attention. Vegetation is also created there such as park and playground planted with green plants are provided in this area. Sun orientation is very good in this area also because one of occupants there telling us that the Sun always does it's great job to dry the clothes.
There are also many other facilities provided which are convenient to occupants such as little temple, guards, and others.
Besides that, we are also required to suggest some improvements for this area. Some disadvantages we found so far are:
- Drains without cover.
- No bus stop.
- Location of guard house is not suitable because it is under the slope of the road.
- Ventilation is not good enough.
- The alley behind the houses are narrow.
- Less lamp-post.
Drains without cover are very deep, cover should be added to prevent animals or human from falling into it.
Plus, we also have to study wind direction, sun orientation of this area.
Project 5(a) - Neighbourhood Elements: Existing Condition
In this, we have to draw key plan, location plan and layout plan. Layout plan must be drew in scale like 1:500, 1:750 and else.
These two plans were gotten from the sales office.
In drawing layout plan for an area, we have to know the graphical symbols for every elements and also street furnitures. Every object has its own symbol, like plants have their own symbols too, shown like in picture above.

I had suggested the improvements should be done on some conditions in this area and presented them graphically in this project.
